This must not be confused with the gifts of the Spirit. The latter are special powers bestowed by the Spirit upon Christ’s people to equip them for service (cf. 1 Cor. 12–14). The gift of the Spirit is the Spirit Himself. Believers receive this divine gift at the time of conversion. . To “receive” a message is to take it to one’s heart, to accept it, to value it. The Greek word has in it the idea of welcoming (cf. Weymouth, Modern Language).
